Mr. C.Y. Leung, Chief Executive of the HKSAR; Mr. Yang Jiang, Deputy Director-General of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the HKSAR; Mr. Song Ruan, Spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry of the People’s Republic of China; Mr. Zhou Wugang, Director of the Political Department of the People’s Liberation Army Hong Kong Garrison; Mr. Zhu Wen, Division Chief of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the HKSAR; Mr. Patrick Nip Tak Kuen, Director of the Information Services Department of Hong Kong were among the guests of honour who raised a toast at the event.

The cocktail reception got under way to the stirring strains of the national anthem. In his speech, Mr. Zhang Guo Liang, President of the Media Circles Preparatory Committee, recounted a recent journey to Hulunbuir in Inner Mongolia by a delegation of media professionals. During the trip, the group was moved by the sight of the boundless expanse of grassland, immense forests and vast lakes, an awe-inspiring metaphor for the sweep and grandeur of the motherland’s history. Mr. Zhang shared with the audience the revelation yielded by the experience: that elevation expands vision, and the higher the perspective, the deeper the insight, and the closer one is to his country.

Since the 1980s and 90s, Hong Kong has been playing an active role in the reform and modernization of China. At the same time, its contributions to the country have also inspired achievements in other areas, turning it into a truly dazzling Pearl of the Orient. The success of country and city should provide ample motivation for Hong Kong media practitioners to help give further impetus to the country’s strategic development and work together for a better future.
