In his speech during the reception, Mr. Zhang Guo Liang, Chairman of the Hong Kong Federation of Journalists and Executive Chairman of the Hong Kong Media Preparatory Committee for the Celebration of National Day, said that the past year has been a year marked by celebration and remembrance. China led the international community in shaking off the effects of the financial tsunami and restoring rapid economic growth, and successfully hosted the Shanghai World Expo. On a more somber note, the country was also hit hard by natural disasters, with the catastrophic Qinghai Yushu earthquake and the devastating mudslides in Gansu Zhouqu taking a combined toll of several thousand lives.

Mr. Zhang said the trial and triumph of the country not only demonstrate to the world its tremendous achievements as well as the resilience and solidarity of its people, but also provide much inspiration and food for thought for everyone. Hong Kong media’s China coverage has become a conduit of shared experiences and pathos between Hong Kong and their mainland compatriots, and provides the rest of the world with a vital window on modern China. While working on the mainland, Hong Kong media professionals have embodied Hong Kong people’s love of the motherland and their fellow countrymen. Their dedication and professionalism, too, have drawn much praise and recognition from all levels of government and the general public.
