In his speech, Mr. C.Y. Leung quoted a 1,500-year-old maxim by Emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty, “The lives of others hold up a mirror to one’s own gain and loss.” He said the magazine was founded in 1977 as a mirror to society at large by Mr. Tsui Sze Man, Member of the Standing Committee of the National Committee of the Political Consultative Conference, and a group of leading local and overseas Chinese figures. For the next 35 years, the magazine remained an outspoken proponent of China’s revival and never wavered from its stated mission of giving a strong and influential voice to society. On many important topics ranging from China’s reform to Hong Kong’s reunification with the motherland, the publication has played a crucial role in guiding and informing public opinion.

Five years ago, with the passing of Mr. Tsui Sze Man and the onslaught of the financial tsunami, The Mirror was at a crossroads. The baton was eventually passed on to Mr. Tsui’s eldest son, Mr. Sein Aye Pierre, and a group of relatives and friends, under whose stewardship the magazine has since stayed the course and continued to fulfill its social responsibility. Mr. Sein Aye Pierre, the current president of The Mirror, said in his speech that in the 5 years since, The Mirror has made a long-term commitment to building on the past and providing a wider forum for Chinese readers in the future. The magazine has established offices in many countries and regions, including a representative office in Taiwan in 2011 to give fresh civic impetus to the peaceful development of bilateral relations across the Strait. Looking to the future, The Mirror will continue to internationalize its operations, broaden its scope and deepen its content.
