In its Reform Era section, the book chronicles the remarkable coming-of-age of Shenzhen over the past 3 decades. The astounding transformation of a little-known fishing village into a thriving urban center of over 7 million people is a microcosm of the epic changes that have, as the result of one man’s decisive helmsmanship, altered not only the destiny of an entire country but the course of history itself. The Grand Ambitions section presents a panoramic retrospective of the 1970s and 1980s, when Deng personally took part in the negotiations between China and Britain. It was during this time that the venerable leader first proposed the groundbreaking “One Country, Two Systems” concept which ultimately led to the Joint Declaration of the Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the Government of the People’s Republic of China on the Question of Hong Kong. The hundreds of photographs collated in the book were testament not only to Deng’s prodigious statesmanship and devotion to his people, but also to a nation’s implacable march towards greatness.

The book also includes numerous photographs of the successive torchbearers of the reforms, including Mr. Jiang Zemin, Mr. Hu Jintao, Mr. Xi Jinping and others, who have kept Deng’s dream alive and written luminous new chapters in the history of China’s ongoing reform and ascension.
