East Meets West as Hong Kong Electronic Media Gather to Celebrate the Year of the Goat

The New Year began on a high note! On February 24, Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK) hosted the Year of the Goat Chinese New Year Gathering. Representatives from Hong Kong’s leading electronic media and friends of the industry got together to exchange New Year’s greetings. All those present were confident the industry would provide audiences with the most diversified and up-to-date media experience in the year ahead. This year’s gathering was a treat for the ears as well as the taste buds, showcasing a crossover of Western and Chinese music, complemented by nostalgic Hong Kong street food. Mr. Roy Tang, Director of RTHK, and Mr. Gregory So, Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development of Hong Kong, provided a new twist on tradition by performing the activation ceremony with an electronic ink brush and electronic gong respectively.

To bring this year’s musical theme to life, the hosts assembled an unprecedented East-meets-West musical “duo”: eighteen musicians from SIU2 and the RTHK Chamber Quartet performed in two groups at the venue simultaneously, one indoor and one outdoor. The highlight of their program was Spring Rhapsody, composed for the event by artist/songwriter Ng Cheuk Yin. Incorporating “Ode to Joy” from Beethoven’s Symphony No.9, Bu Bu Gao, Xi Yang Yang and the Spring Festival Overture, the composition fused Chinese festive music, the classics and jazz, and was performed in a combined jazz trio and classical quartet format using traditional Chinese woodwind and string instruments. The result was an aural kaleidoscope that transcended cultural boundaries and resonated with the festive spirit.
