In his opening speech, Mr. Raymond Yip, Deputy Executive Director of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, said that Entertainment Expo Hong Kong has over the years grown to become the largest film and television trade show in Asia, and the second largest in the world. The number of participating media organizations has risen from the original 75 to 780 this year, of which 360 were TV World participants.
Also speaking at the opening ceremony was Mr. Tsui Siu Ming, Chairman of the Hong Kong Televisioners Association, who pointed out that while Internet technology has accelerated media integration, and the arrival of the digital TV receiver has broken down geographical barriers for TV viewers, there are copyright issues that surround the content provided through these channels. It is therefore necessary to review and expand the legislative purview of statutes regulating cross-media collaboration to ensure effective oversight.
The opening ceremony was followed by the International Forum in the afternoon. With the increasing availability of streamed content, the popularity of on-demand TV programs has been steadily growing, and the collateral impact on ratings has presented a challenge for traditional TV. With “Streaming – Opportunities and Challenges” as its theme, the International Forum brought together representatives of the online TV industry in China, Hong Kong and Korea to dissect the phenomenon and share their experiences. They were: Dr. Jonathan Ding, Chair of the Multiscreen Internet Access Standard Group, Ministry of Industry & Information Technology; Mr. Kim Jin Kwon, CEO of KBS-Media and Director of ICT; Mr. Li Chong, Director, Mango TV OTT Content Operations; Mr. Tang Qingzhi, Director & General Manager of Mei Ah Entertainment Group; Mr. Tin Mok, CEO of International Business, Letv.
