Basic Law Photo Exhibition Revisits 25 Years of Hong Kong History

On August 13, the Photo Exhibition Commemorating the 25th Anniversary of the Proclamation of the Basic Law of the HKSAR was officially opened at the Hong Kong City Hall.

The event was organized by Wen Wei Po, supported by the Hong Kong Chinese General Chamber of Commerce, the Hong Kong Federation of Trade Unions, the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong and other organizations. High spirits animated the opening ceremony, as guests gathered to celebrate a quarter century of the Basic Law. One of the luminaries at the event was Mr. Kit Szeto, Director & CEO of Dim Sum TV.

Mr. C.Y. Leung, Chief Executive of the HKSAR, gave the opening speech. He said that a picture is worth a thousand words, and a photographic review of the historical background of the Basic Law and Hong Kong’s development in the 25 years since its proclamation is as meaningful as it is invaluable to a proper understanding of the original intent behind such bedrock principles as “One Country, Two Systems”, self-administration and a high degree of autonomy.

In his speech, Mr. Wang Shucheng, Member of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and Chairman of the Board & President of Wen Wei Po, said that there are at present certain individuals in Hong Kong who appear to have lost sight of the original purpose of the Basic Law, and who lack a firm grasp of its contents. This, he said, has given rise to certain tensions and potential issues in Hong Kong society. He expressed his hope that the exhibition would enable more young people to acquire a better understanding of the implementation of the Basic Law over the past 25 years.

The exhibition is scheduled to run for three days, starting on the August 14th. Through more than 250 historical photos, it offered a retrospective of modern Hong Kong history, the period of Sino-British negotiations, the drafting of the Basic Law, Hong Kong’s return to China and the development of Hong Kong society under the purview of the Basic Law since that time. Collectively, these photos form a permanent record of the achievements Hong Kong has made in such areas as the economy, tourism, infrastructure, cultural exchange and others under the constitutional guarantees of the Basic Law.
