The CGCC-FHKA Joint Forum Explores Insights Emerged from China’s Two Major Annual National Sessions

The Chinese General Chamber of Commerce (CGCC) and Friends of Hong Kong Association (FHKA) joined hands on March 18 afternoon to organize a forum at the Four Seasons Hotel to discuss the hot issues emerged from annual sessions of the National People’s Congress (NPC) and the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) of China (Two Sessions). Scholars and experts from various disciplines and sectors gathered to explore insights of the Two Sessions, and over 300 guests from the business sector and a wider community also attended the forum.

Mr Kit Szeto, Vice-Chairman of the Cultural Industries Committee of the CGCC cum Director & CEO of Dim Sum TV was invited to participate in this Forum on Insights into China’s Two Sessions, discussing and exchanging views with the guests.

President of Friends of Hong Kong Association Mr Stephen Tai pointed out that youth work was emphasized in the Two Sessions held this year. He stressed that Hong Kong should find its own position to tie in China’s development , and only strengthening the world in youth development together with playing an effective role of “super-connector” in linking up with the international community, could therebe a better future for Hong Kong.

Deputy Secretary-General of the NPC Standing Committee Mr Dou Shuhua,Deputy Secretary-General of the CPPCC National Committee Mr Chang Rongjun,Former Vice President (Vice Minister) of the Development Research Center of the State Council Mr Liu Shijin,the academician from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences Prof Wang Tongsan and Vice-President of the Chinese Association of Hong Kong and Macao Studies Prof Lau Siu-kai delivered speeches in the Forum, exploring various China’s macroeconomic issues such as the national 13th Five-year Plan, the Belt and Road Initiative, adjustment of China’s economic structure and the internationalization of RMB, as well as making in-depth analysis from various perspectives on the hot issues emerged from the Two Sessions.

The Vice-President of the Chinese Association of Hong Kong and Macao Studies Prof Lau Siu-kai, who took the last turn to deliver his speech, shared his views on the role Hong Kong could play in China’s implementation of the Belt and Road Initiative. He said that Hong Kong embraced great opportunities as well as enormous challenges in the aspect of facilities, trade and financing. How to capitalize on its advantages as well as stay away from its shortcomings so as to enhance collaboration with countries from the rest of the world was something Hong Kong had to contemplate at present, Prof Lau remarked.

The questions-and-answers session was hosted by CGCC’s Standing Committee Member Ms Wong Wai-ching. The guest attended the Forum discussed heartily the social and livelihood issues emerged from the Two Sessions while scholars and experts advised on problems now encountered by China such as excess capacity, lowering investment growth, conflicts between income and expenditure and also how to foster economic and social progress in Hong Kong as well as in Mainland China.
