Discussions spotlighting economic impact of Brexit on Hong Kong

Five distinguished guests shared with audience their own perspectives on how the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union (termed as “Brexit” for the issue) would affect the economic situation of Hong Kong and China under the context of changing trends in Asia’s economy. It is was felt that Hong Kong as the second-largest trading partner of Europe would experience certain repercussions for its market.

Ms. Jo Hawley, Director of Trade and Investment, Hong Kong & Macao, British Consulate-General saw that after Brexit, the devaluation of the UK pound would provide greater opportunities for investments in Britain. Prof. Edward K. Y. CHEN, President, Qianhai Institute for Innovative Research felt that more opportunities for economic development would emerge after Brexit and that would benefit the Asian markets. Mr. TSE Kwok Leung, Head of Economics & Policy Research, Bank of China (Hong Kong) Limited, on the economic impact of Brexit, said “The economic relations between Hong Kong and the UK would be much tighter than before, and its position as offshore RMB center would also be strengthened.”
