The first “Encounter in Macao – Arts and Cultural Festival between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries”
Dim Sum TV was invited to Macao to participate in the first "Encounter in Macao – Arts and Cultural Festival between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries", a festival supported by the Secretariat for Social Affairs and Culture and hosted by the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macao S.A.R. Government, officially launched a series of exceptional events starting on July 6.
The Chinese-Portuguese Arts and Cultural Festival takes "Encounter in Macao" as the theme; offers Macao as a platform for exchanges as well as a bridge for inter-communication between China and Portuguese-speaking countries, demonstrates the radiance of a multiculturally renowned city, and establishes its cultural cooperation and exchange mechanism between Chinese and Portuguese-speaking countries. The festival includes five highlights: 1. the China and Portuguese-speaking Countries Film Festival, 2. the Exhibition “Chapas Sínicas – Stories of Macao in Torre do Tombo” and lectures, 3. the China and Portuguese-speaking Gala Performance, 4. the Cultural Forum between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries as well as 5. the Arts Exhibition between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries.
“Chapas Sínicas – Stories of Macao in Torre do Tombo”
The “Chapas Sínicas – Stories of Macao in Torre do Tombo” exhibition will be held in two phases, from July 7 to August 7 and from August 21 to December 7, at the Handover Gifts Museum of Macao. The “Chapas Sínicas” has documented the official correspondences between the Chinese and Portuguese officials during the Qing dynasty that reflected the social conditions, people’s lives, social and trade development of Macao at that time and marks the historical significance to China, Portugal and even the whole world.
This exhibition showcases a selection of over 100 records, including 12 original documents, which will be exhibited in Macao for one week. The exhibition covers important historical witnesses such as Cheung Po Tsai, Western missionaries, and Western boats.

China and Portuguese-speaking Countries Gala Performance
At 8 pm on July 6, the "China and Portuguese-speaking Countries Gala Performance" of "Encounter in Macao – Arts and Cultural Festival between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries" was staged at the Macao Cultural Centre Grand Auditorium. The evening invited art performing groups from Gansu Province and eight Portuguese-speaking countries to perform ancient music and wonderful songs and dances, presenting enchanting cultural and art performances.
The gala performance showcases the uniqueness and charisma of both Chinese and Portuguese cultures through demonstrating the cultural and artistic development of participating countries and regions, as well as providing a cultural exchange performance platform for each performing artist. Artists from Gansu present songs and dances of classified intangible cultural heritage that demonstrate the folk customs in Northwest China. In turn, Portuguese-speaking artists from Angola, East Timor, São Tomé and Brazil, etc., also bring on their performances that embrace their own local unique cultural customs.

“Cultural Forum between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries”
The "Cultural Forum between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries" was held at 10 am on July 7 at the Macao Tower Convention & Entertainment Centre. The "China and Portuguese-speaking Countries Cultural Forum" is one of the highlights of the "Encounter in Macao – Arts and Cultural Festival between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries" held for the very first time this year. With the theme of "cultural diversity", the forum invites experts and scholars from mainland China, Macao, Hong Kong, Portugal, Brazil, Mozambique, Angola, Cape Verde, East Timor, São Tomé and Príncipe and Guinea-Bissau to discuss and share their thoughts on the topics of intangible cultural heritage conservation and the evolution of traditional culture.
In addition to the keynote speeches, the forum also has a discussion and exchange session to allow experts and scholars from all countries to interact and share experiences. Through organizing cultural forums, the organizer, Cultural Affairs Bureau hopes to promote the bilateral exchanges and cooperation between the Chinese and Portuguese-speaking countries with Macao as the center, and to encourage the public to appreciate the beauty of the Chinese and Portuguese cultures, and to arouse the public interest in treasuring and protecting the unique and diversified cultural resources of Macao.
