The Second Belt & Road Agrifood & Trade Summit 2019 Held in Hong Kong

Dim Sum TV was invited to attend the opening ceremony and the summit of the second Belt and Road International Food Expo (Hong Kong) in AsiaWorld-Expo on 11 th June, 2019. The food exhibition was hosted by Hong Kong Belt and Road Food Trade Association and China Agriculture Exhibition Association. It provided more than 300 booths, divided into six thematic exhibition areas for agrifood, food and beverage, wine, food and chain restaurant, halal food, and professional service, equipment and investment.

Mr. Yip Cheung Chun, President of Hong Kong Hakka Associations and Chairman of Hong Kong Belt and Road Food Trade Association pointed out that, the exhibition aimed at offering business opportunities for merchants of the world by facilitating the cooperation between China and countries along the Belt and Road and building a platform of import and export trade in the field of agricultural and food products.

Mr. Deng Zhixi, Deputy Director of National Agriculture Exhibition Center said that strengthen the international cooperation of agriculture and food industry has become the common need among countries and regions along the Belt and Road. He felt there is a need of taking unique advantages of Hong Kong and building an effective mechanism of communication and innovation to further this development.

The Second Belt and Road Agrifood and Trade Summit 2019 brought together officials, industry leaders and experts from about 40 countries and regions, and discussed about the international agrifood industry of the Belt and Road and how to promote the development of national economy and their collaboration.

Mr. Tam Yiu-chung, Member of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress of the P.R.C and Honorary Chairman of the Belt and Road International Food Expo (Hong Kong) Committee, emphasized that since China is accelerating the building of modern agriculture, which is complementary to countries along the Belt and Road, Hong Kong should play a pivotal role of connecting China with the countries and help them to establish partnerships.

Mr. Zhang Lubiao, Director General of Agricultural Trade Promotion Center, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of the P.R.C., and Secretary General of CCPIT-Specialized Sub-Council of Agriculture, said that the initiative of the Belt and Road gained is gaining support from the international community for its rapid development in agricultural products. The Chinese market keeps opening and countries along the Belt and Road are becoming Chinese significant partners of import and export. The Belt and Road International Food Expo (Hong Kong) could better promote the cooperation and development of agricultural trade in each region.

Dr. Vincent Martin, Representative of Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in the People’s Republic of China and DPR Korea, said the initiative of the Belt and Road is bringing to the countries and regions concerned the opportunities of collaboration in agricultural economy and trade, ensured the food security and set up a platform for promoting the sustainable development of agriculture.

The first discussion, hosted by Mr. So Gregory Kam Leung, former Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development of HKSAR Government in the afternoon, focused on discussing the import and export policies of international agrifood of the Belt and Road and the chances of developing its market. Mr. Angelo B. Taningco, Assistant Secretary of Department of Trade and Industry of Republic of the Philippines, Mr. Tran Van Cong, Deputy Director General of Department of the Agro-Processing and Trade Promotion of Agriculture and Rural Development of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, Mr. Zhu Shixi, Deputy to the 13 th National People’s Congress of the P.R.C. and Mayor of the People’s Government of Zhumadian, Henan Province of the P.R.C., and Mr. Chiu Ching Chun, the 16 th and 17 th County Magistrate of Hsinchu County, Taiwan discussed about the current situation of domestic agrifood industry, its advantages, related policies and opportunities of business and investment. They hoped to further expand the export of agricultural product and attract more investment.

The second discussion was mainly about the transnational agriculture and food trade, hosted by Dr. Liu Yingjie, Vice President of China Association of Agricultural Leading Enterprises and Executive Director of Agriculture Technology Innovation Center of Tsinghua University. Mr. Liu Shenli, former Member of the National Committee of CPPCC and President of China Association of Agricultural Leading Enterprises, Ms. Yang Bo, Member of Communist Party Committee, Director and Deputy General Manager of Shanxi Xinghuacun Fenjiu Group Co., Ltd, Mr. Yang Wen Ta, Chairman of Kaida Leisure Development Co., Ltd and Chairman of Jiangsu Orto Regimen Industry Development Co., Ltd, and Mr. Zheng Ziyang, General Manager of Foshan Tianze Testing Services Co,. Ltd shared their own strategies and measures to attain more chances of agricultural business as the implementation of the initiative of the Belt and Road.
