On May 4, close to 3,000 young people representing Hong Kong and over 30 ethnic minorities on the mainland congregated at Golden Bauhinia Square to attend a flag-raising ceremony to mark the 2009 May 4 Youth Festival. This ceremony was organized by the Committee of the Hong Kong Youth Alliance as part of its activities for the 60th National Day Celebrations. This year also marked the 90th anniversary of the Youth Festival, making the occasion all the more historically significant. Dim Sum TV’s Director & Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Kit Szeto, was invited to attend the flag-raising ceremony.

The most iconic event of the May 4 Youth Festival, the flag-raising ceremony at Golden Bauhinia Square has been held since 2006. On May 4 this year, the customary police honour guard and marching band for performing the flag-raising ceremony were replaced by representatives from Hong Kong’s various uniformed youth corps and choirs. The 4 flag-bearers from the Hong Kong Civil Aid Service Youth Corps and the Scout Association of Hong Kong, were officially designated “May 4 Flag Bearers”. To compete for this honour, more than 10 youth organizations in Hong Kong faced off against each other in a flag-raising competition prior to the ceremony, with representatives from the two winning teams forming the honour guard and the colour guard of the May 4 flag-raising ceremony.
