The President of the People’s Republic of China, Mr. Hu Jintao, was invited to preside over the 10th Anniversary Celebration of Macao’s Return to the Motherland and the Inauguration Ceremony of the Third-Term Macao SAR Government, and ascended the reviewing stand to swear in the new Chief Executive.
While Macao celebrated this historic day, Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao cross-border cooperation also reached a new milestone. During the celebrations, the Hengqin Island development project, which had been in planning for 17 years, was officially launched. To mark the occasion, President Hu Jintao traveled from Macao to Zhuhai to officiate at the groundbreaking ceremony for the new campus of the University Macao. At the ceremony, President Hu unveiled a commemorative plaque and laid the ceremonial foundation stone for the project. After 10-15 years of development, Hengqin Island will become a pilot project that points the way to new forms of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao cooperation under the “One Country, Two Systems” principle.
