The Chinese Chamber of Commerce sets up new
Pearl River Delta Committee.
Dim Sum TV talks to

PRD committee chairman Mr. Tsang Chi Hung.

On December 7, the Hong Kong Chinese General Chamber of Commerce held a cocktail reception in Guangzhou to announce the establishment its Pearl River Delta Committee. In his capacities as Member of the 47th Standing Committee of the Chinese General Chamber of Commerce, Chairman of the Art & Culture Committee, and Member of the PRD Committee, Mr. Kit Szeto, Director & CEO of Dim Sum TV, attended the reception. Dr. Jonathan Choi Koon-shum, Chairman of the Chinese General Chamber of Commerce, Mr. Liu Kun, Vice Governor of the People’s Government of Guangdong Province, Mr. Chen Mingde, Vice Mayor of Guangzhou Municipality, and Mr. Rex Chang, Director of the HKSAR Government’s Economic and Trade Office in Guangzhou, presided over the inauguration ceremony.

During the event, Dr. Jonathan Choi Koon-shum and Mr. Tsang Chi-hung talked to Dim Sum TV in an exclusive interview.

According to Dr. Choi, based on the strategy set out by the Guangzhou-Hong Kong Cooperation Framework Agreement and the National 12th Five-Year Plan, the CGCC recognizes that the Pearl River Delta region will play a pivotal role in the development of the national economy, and pose many opportunities and challenges in the years ahead. The new PRD Committee’s mandate is to serve as a conduit between Guangdong and Hong Kong, and provide its members’ enterprises in the Pearl River Delta with a strong support network.

Dr. Choi also revealed that on the morning of December 7, the CGCC’s new board of directors paid a visit to the governor of Guangdong Province, Mr. Huang Hua-Hua. According to Mr. Huang, of the 14 proposals submitted by the CGCC regarding the Guangdong-Hong Kong Cooperation Framework Agreement, 8 have already been confirmed, while the remaining 6 are works in progress. Mr. Huang said he welcomed ideas and suggestions from the CGCC, and was confident that the PRD Committee would foster closer collaboration between Guangdong and Hong Kong.

According to Mr. Tsang, the committee will be hosting cross-border forums next year, in which representatives of different chambers of commerce, experts and officials can exchange ideas on how best to facilitate cooperation between Guangdong and Hong Kong. The conclusions reached by the forum will be presented as recommendations to the two governments to add further momentum to the integration of the financial, commercial, service and cultural sectors of the two localities.

Mr. Tsang was also presented with a certificate of recognition by Mr. Liu Kun, Vice Governor of the People’s Government of Guangdong Province.

Founded over 100 years ago, the Chinese General Chamber of Commerce is one of the oldest and largest chambers of commerce in Hong Kong. At present, it has over 6,000 group, company and individual members. Its members’ businesses represent a broad cross-section of Hong Kong’s private sector, including manufacture, import and export, banking, insurance, property development, construction, information technology, professional services, transportation and logistics, foods, wholesale and retail, restaurants and catering services, culture and tourism. Most members have investments on the mainland.

In recent years, the chamber has been actively expanding its membership, and has successfully recruited many multinational corporations, Hong Kong-based foreign enterprises and overseas chambers of commerce. At the same time, it has completed a new CGCC building in Nansha, Guangzhou, which will serve as its Guangzhou office upon completion.
