China News Service Celebrates 60 Years Of Bringing The Voice Of China To The World
The Hong Kong branch of China News Service celebrated the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the news agency with a cocktail reception on October 9 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Founded in 1952, China News Service is an international news agency serving Chinese communities worldwide, with a reporting style distinguished by a keen interest in people and culture. At the event, Mr. Liu Beixian, President of China News Service, reaffirmed the commitment to build the agency into a worldwide hub of Chinese–language news and information.
Guests at the cocktail reception included: Mr. Tung Chee Hwa, Vice-Chairman of the National Committee of the People’s Political Consultative Conference; Mr. C.Y. Leung, Chief Executive of the HKSAR; Mr. He Yafei, Vice-Minister of the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council; Mr. Li Gang, Deputy Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the HKSAR; Ms. Jiang Yu, Deputy Commissioner, Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the HKSAR; Mrs. Rita Fan Hsu Lai Tai, Member of the Standing Committee of the Eleventh National People’s Congress of the People’s Republic of China; Mr. Kit Szeto, Director & CEO of Dim Sum TV, also attended the event at the host’s invitation.

The cocktail reception began by observing a minute’s silence in memory of the victims of the Lamma Island ferry tragedy. Ms. Zhang Yu, President of the Hong Kong branch of China News Service, acted as the host of the evening, with Mr. Zhang Xinxin, Chief Editor of China News Service, reciting the tributes and congratulatory messages from well wishers. Among them was Mr. C.Y. Leung, Chief Executive of the HKSAR, who sent the salutation, “First with the news, foremost among Chinese-language media.”

In his speech, Mr. He Yafei, Vice-Minister of the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council Congress, said that, after a journalistic odyssey that spanned six decades, China News Service has honed and perfected a truly distinctive voice, one that combines objective truths and vivid examples to tell the story of China to outstanding effect. He expressed his wish that the HKSAR Government, Hong Kong society and the Central Government’s Hong Kong-based organizations will keep up their support of China News Service. At the same time, the news service will continue to broaden the scope, heighten the quality and deepen the substance of its coverage as the “Voice of China”.
The reception, which brought together over 300 luminaries represents a cross-section of Hong Kong society as well as many leading figures of the media industry. China News Service celebrated its 60th anniversary, engaging more and more friends and media partners to help carry the “Voice of China” to a wider audience and farther shores.
