Mr. Ouyang Xiaoqing, General Manager of Wen Wei Po, and Dr. Jonathan Choi, Member of the National Committee of the CPPCC and Chairman of the Sun Wah Group, both spoke at the launch ceremony to wish the organizers a successful competition and to express their gratitude for the supporting organizations.

Both Mr. Ouyang and Dr. Choi said that the 1st Hong Kong Student China’s National Knowledge Contest held last year had received much positive feedback from society. It was their hope that this year’s event would continue to draw students’ active participation. They said 2012 has been an eventful year for China. The 18th National People’s Congress officially marked the transition to a new leadership that would steer the country forward. The successful docking of the Shenzhou-9 spacecraft with the Tiangong space lab was the talk of the international community. Closer to home, Hong Kong celebrated the 15th anniversary of its reunification with the motherland and looked forward to ever-closer cross-border ties.

Speaking in an interview after the ceremony, Dr. Jonathan Choi said that Hong Kong should in the future not only be Asia’s financial center, but also make use of its diversity as well as its blend of Eastern and Western cultures to provide Chinese culture with a portal to the rest of the world. The “stepping-out” of Chinese culture should be undertaken in appropriate ways to ensure wide acceptance abroad. Hong Kong students are very intelligent, he believes, and that the contest should first give them a thorough grounding in Chinese culture, which will in turn foster in them a distinct cultural identity and create a strong sense of cultural mission.
