Started in 2004 and now in its 10th year, the News Cup Soccer Competition between journalists from Guangzhou, Hong Kong and Macau is an annual event, with the journalistic communities of the three cities rotating as hosts. The tri-city competition has become a yearly get-together for newsmen, a chance for them to catch up with their journalistic brethren on and off the soccer pitch, and strengthen the long-standing ties between the news media of the three cities.

“Whatever the results from year to year, our friendship will always be the biggest winner.” That was how Mayor Chen Jianhua summed up the camaraderie of the competition. In his impromptu speech, he recalled the history of exchange and cooperation between the three cities, and invited journalists and their fellow citizens from Hong Kong and Macau to visit Guangzhou, where they can discover the rich lore and culture of the old Guangzhou, experience the vitality and modernity of the new one, and celebrate its imminent metamorphosis into a world-class metropolis of the future.
