TV World Helps Build New Television Ecosystem

On February 27, TV World, organized by the Hong Kong Televisioners Association and The Hong Kong Trade Development Council, officially opened. During the press conference, representatives of TV broadcasters in Hong Kong and on both sides of the Strait shared their expectations for the future of TV and new media application, and were unanimous in highlighting the importance of a collaborative spirit as the driving force behind the TV industry.

Speaking about the accelerating integration of traditional and new media, Mr. Kit Szeto, Director & CEO of Dim Sum TV, said that the trend is conducive to the consolidation of media resources, and will give rise to more effective and interactive broadcasting channels.

Mr. Xue Jian Hua, Chief Executive Officer of HKS, expressed his view that new TV channels enjoy pole position in the new media arena. Hong Kong Satellite TV aims to seize this opportunity to create a global TV channel and link up new media with WiFi, IPTV and outdoor mobility in a seamless service offering.

Mr. Kwong Hoi Ying, Senior Vice President, Corporate Development and External Affairs, Asia Television, introduced the new aTV Classic channel as well as the TV station’s plans for promoting digital services in South-East Asia.

Ms. Ng Man Yee, Head of Corporate Communications, Radio Television Hong Kong, said that the network will air creative new pilots in the latter half of the year.

Marking the 10th anniversary of its establishment, Now TV announced its interest in taking part in the production of TV dramas, which will be launched in the U.S. and Canada.

Mr. Tong Hing Chi, Managing Director of Mei Ah Entertainment Group, revealed plans for offering UTV, the mobile television services it launched in collaboration with China Mobile, in Thailand and Vietnam.

Now in its sixth year, TV World is held to promote dialogue and idea-sharing within the industry. As in previous years, this year’s event will provide a platform for cultural, business and information exchange between television professionals.

TV Workshop, held for the first time this year to explore the merger between new technology and market trends, echoed the cuurent interest in the mini movie phenomenon, and proposed a new offshoot --- the idea of personal TV stations. This would make it possible, for example, to feature a day in the life of an entertainment artist to enable all-round interaction between fans and their idols.

Mr. Peter Lam, Vice-President of the Hong Kong Televisioners Association, pointed out that the impact of mini movies has been such that it has led to a new ecosystem in which low-budget productions are the norm, while smart TV and personal TV represent a trend towards personal TV stations, the new breeding ground for stars.

The 17th Hong Kong International Film & TV Market will be held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre from March 18 to 21, and will attract over 700 film and TV companies, media and overseas exhibitors from around the world. Dim Sum TV’s distinctive display wall and new program trailers will be shown on 4 consecutive days in the Interactive Screening Zone.

The 2013 TV World Opening Ceremony and International Forum will be held on March 19 (Tues.). The forum will discuss the development of television content and its assimilation into new media, and will explore ways to produce unique programming to increase viewer loyalty and stay ahead of the competition in a world with multiplying, multi-faceted entertainment options.
