Both the guests of honour at the ceremony, Ms. Regina Ip Lau Suk Yee, Member of the Executive Council of Hong Kong, and Mr. Michael Wong, Director of the Information Services Department, endorsed the competition as a meaningful event. They urged the aspiring journalists to always produce work that is accurate, detailed and factual; by freely expressing constructive opinions and criticisms in independent, objective commentaries, media practitioners can spur ever-greater efforts from the government and society at large.

The event aims at supporting the publication of campus newspapers and encouraging creativity on the part of journalism students. It provides, for the first time, a competitive framework in which journalism students from Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and the mainland can put their knowledge and skills to the test, and academic exchange between journalism schools on both sides of the Strait can be facilitated. This year’s awards received an overwhelming response: it drew a total of 267 entries from 12 universities, up from 8 the previous year, representing Hong Kong, Macau, the mainland, and, for the first time, Taiwan.
