“Where is Media Heading?”-- Mr. Kit Szeto talked about the prospects of the media industry

On October 18, 2018, Mr. Kit Szeto, Director and CEO of Dim Sum TV Hong Kong, was invited to the School of Communication, Hong Kong Baptist University as a guest speaker to the class in the MA Programme in Media Management. He talked with students about not only the past, but also the new opportunities of this industry.

Today’s topic: "Where is media heading?" While looking at the media industry nowadays, Mr. Szeto said that with the development of Internet and technology, users have changed their habits in where and when to access media. Access is now mainly by "TV-Mobile-Tablet", traditional media delivered through "television" should be diversifying more. The great changes in the platform of access have brought both challenges and opportunities to the media industry.

On the one hand, since the advent of the WE media, content fragmentation with faster speed and frequency of news and entertainment interactions have given rise to a large number of new media platforms, such as the Tik Tok, Toutiao etc., etc. On the other hand, the development of these applications and the enhancement of information shall provide more dissemination channels in the future. With the emergence of these channels, it will help the audience with a strong sense of engagement and participation.

Mr. Szeto said that with A.I., content from the “one for many” in television era to move forward to “everyone’s offering being different” in the new media era, it is also the driving force for further innovation and changes in the media industry. Breaking down the size of user base, the media industry can meet the differentiated needs of broader range of niche users groups.

Finally, Mr. Szeto said that with the progression of time and continuous changes in technology, the media industry cannot stay as a "hard rock" but will evolve with the development of science and technology. Catching the opportunity and stepping up to the challenges, the media industry will gain a new and brighter future.
