Our hearts are with Sichuan no matter how far apart we are

On May 12th at 2:28pm, a magnitude 8.0 earthquake struck Wenchuan County in Sichuan, causing extensive damage varying in severity in over eight cities, including Sichuan, Gansu, Shaanxi, Chongqing, Yunnan, Shanxi, Guizhou and Hubei. According to a report by the Ministry of Civil Affairs of the People’s Republic of China, the earthquake has claimed 69,146 lives and caused 374,131 injuries as of midnight June 11th. 17,516 people are still missing. The devastating disaster has caused numerous deaths and countless destruction, but at the same it has united the hearts of all the Chinese people.

On May 14th, the Director and Chief Executive Officer of Dim Sum TV, Mr. Kit Szeto, wrote a deeply moving open letter “to all colleagues in response to the Sichuan Earthquake.” Dim Sum TV staff from the mainland, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan were all quick to donate money to the victims. They also wrote notes and prayers to be sent along with their donations: “Bless China! Bless Sichuan!”; “Dim Sum TV sends our love to Sichuan!”; “Hang On, China!”; “We are all one family!”; “From everyone at Dim Sum, our hearts go out to the disaster zone….” Though simple and modest, these notes underscore a touching sense of solidarity with the victims.

The first batch of donation funds and condolence letters were sent to the Guangdong Charity Federation on May 16th, delivered under the name “Dim Sum TV Staff.” The Federation will then distribute the donations to anyone in the disaster area in need. The Federation thanked Dim Sum in a written statement, saying, “Your kind deeds and your generosity will help give strength and hope to the disaster victims, and we are deeply grateful for your donations.”

Out of concern for those affected by the tragedy, Dim Sum TV has changed the program schedule and updated the Dim Sum Net website www.dimsumtv.net. Dim Sum TV will now show promotional advertisements to encourage donations, and will contribute footage to a TV documentary about the relief efforts, “Speakers’ Corner,” which will be aired throughout the schedule starting from mid-May in Hong Kong and Macau and streamed on the Dim Sum Net homepage. The homepage will also feature a series of notices on how to get involved with relief efforts, and a condolences page from Dim Sum TV staff has been set up as well.

Even though we are separated by many miles, our hearts still go out to all of those affected by the tragedy in Sichuan. We will be following the reconstruction closely and we will be ready to respond accordingly.
