The Award Presentation of the 10 Most Significant News of the HKSARG 2010 Election was held on February 14 at the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre. The event was organized by 25 mainstream media in Hong Kong. Among the guests was Mr. Kit Szeto, Director & CEO of Dim Sum TV, one of the organizers. Close to 130,000 votes were received for the annual poll, with 8 of the 10 most significant news stories related to the economy and general welfare.

“Rapid Response by Government to Manila Tour Bus Hostage Crisis” was voted the top story of the year. The incident was given continuous live TV coverage in August and shook audiences throughout the Greater Pearl River Delta region, including those in Guangdong and Macau.

The economies of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau have become inseparable. For the people of Hong Kong, as for their compatriots in Guangdong and Macau, rising inflation and property prices have been a key concern over the past year. Not surprisingly, “Government Measures Curb Property Prices and Help Home Buyers” was voted onto Top 10 list, providing policy-makers tackling common issues in the Greater Pearl River Delta area with a point of reference.
The other 8 government policies on the list are: Legislative Council Passes Minimum Wages Ordinance; Privacy Safeguarded by New Legislation; Hong Kong Bids to Host 2023 Asian Games; Hong Kong’s Successfully Participated in World Expo; Electronic Version of Along the River During the Qingming Festival Draws Large Crowds; Government Efforts Pay Off with Legislative Green Light for Constitutional Reforms; Food Safety Boosted with Implementation of Nutrition Labelling; Department of Education Grants Grace Period and Delays School Closings; Government Speeds Up Redevelopment of Old Neighbourhoods and Lowers Minimum Auction Value of Old Buildings.
Among the members of the business community attending the event is Mr. Chan Yau Nam, Vice-Chairman of the Hong Kong Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Chairman of the Chiuchow Chamber of Commerce.
By and large, the selection of these news topics is proof that the people of Hong Kong put security, both physical and economic, high on their lists of priorities. It also constitutes a public wish list of sorts, one that calls for further government actions to take advantage of the global economic recovery and China’s rapid development to sustain local economic growth in the year ahead.
The guests of honour at the event included Mr. Donald Tsang, Chief Executive of the HKSAR, Mr. Li Gang, Deputy Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the HKSAR, Mr. Li Yuanming, Deputy Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China in the HKSAR, Mr. Lee Ka Kit, National Committee Member of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and Executive Director of Henderson Land Development Company Ltd.
