The results of the annual poll were announced by the organizers in mid-January. “Government Unveils $6,000 Scheme” and “Minimum Wage for Low-Income Workers Implemented”, two events closely linked to people’s livelihood, topped the list. The third-highest vote getter was “Li Keqiang Announces Beneficial Hong Kong Policies During Visit”, indicating strong public interest in economic development in China and Hong Kong as well as cross-border cooperation.

The guests of honour include Mr. Donald Tsang, Chief Executive of the HKSAR (seated, second row, 5th from right), and Mr. Li Gang, Deputy Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the HKSAR (seated, second row, 6th from right). Of the 10 Most Significant News selected, 5 were issues that generated much public debate, reflecting a state of constructive interaction between government and citizens. These included “Government Appeals over Foreign Domestic Workers’ Right of Abode”, “Government Limits Number of Non-Resident Pregnant Women Giving Birth in Hong Kong”, “Government Appeals to Keep Start of Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge Construction on Schedule”, “Replacement Mechanism Proposed to Prevent Legislative Council Resignations and By-Elections”, “Government Curbs Illegal Structures in New Territories Village Houses”.

The public expects the government to address its concerns in a timely fashion, and this expectation is a test of the government’s policy-making efficacy. In his speech, Mr. Wang Shu Cheng, President of Wen Wei Po Daily News and Chairman of Wen Wei Po Co. Ltd., said that the 10 Most Significant News election provided a platform for Hong Kong citizens to comb through and review government policies of the past year. It also allowed them to retrace the path they have traveled with the government, and gain valuable insights from the interaction and evolving relationship.

This year, 106 secondary schools and 10 universities were involved in the event, suggesting that the number of economically and socially young people is on the rise. This was echoed in the large number of young faces among the winners and guest performers, which coloured this year’s ceremony with a bright new energy.
